Book Description
The true stories in this one-of-a-kind collection cross the spectrum from terrifying to comical to downright bizarre. Prepare yourself for the most gripping and unbelievable stories about big waves, shark attacks, tsunamis, boating disasters, devastating wipeouts, pranks, and bad judgment calls. These thirty tales, by surf journalists, filmmakers, magazine editors, watermen, and everyday surfers, illuminate the less enchanting aspects of a life committed to surf.

Call for Submissions: C4LJ
The Code4Lib Journal (C4LJ) will provide a forum to foster community and share information among those interested in the intersection of libraries, technology, and the future.
Submissions are currently being accepted for the first issue of this promising new journal. Please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals for articles to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com (a private list read only by C4LJ editors) by Friday, August 31, 2007. Publication of the first issue is planned for late December 2007.
Possible topics for articles include, but are not limited to:
* Practical applications of library technology. Both actual and hypothetical applications invited.
* Technology projects (failed, successful, proposed, or in-progress), how they were done, and challenges faced
* Case studies
* Best practices
* Reviews
* Comparisons of third party software or libraries
* Analyses of library metadata for use with technology
* Project management and communication within the library environment
* Assessment and user studies
Above all, C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors
welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics. Anything that
supports the mission of C4LJ is welcome.
The goal of the journal is to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles in the journal should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure or guidelines. Writers should aim for the middle ground between, on the one hand, blog or mailing-list posts, and, on the other hand, articles in traditional journals. We want publishing in the journal to be easy and painless, helping the community to share timely, relevant information that is currently shared all too rarely.
Articles need not include comprehensive literature reviews and bibliographies, although pointing the reader to useful work that has gone before can certainly be helpful. Authors are encouraged to include code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code where appropriate.
The Journal will be electronic only, and at least initially, edited rather than refereed.
Please contact us with proposals or queries, as well as draft articles, at c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com (a private list read only by C4LJ editors) no later than Friday, August 31, 2007. Earlier contact is appreciated.
For more information, you can find information on our mission, processes and structures, and guidelines for authors at: http://journal.code4lib.org/
We look forward to hearing from interested people.

Atten: NWS Members Only
STAPLE MAGAZINE - INVITATION TO CONTRIBUTE
The next issue of Staple magazine will focus on Nottingham and feature a showcase of NWS members’ work. Any members who wish to send poems, stories, articles, rants on the state of the art, theatrical monologues that work on the page, or any other unclassifiable items please forward them either by email to Wayne Burrows
wayneburrows@ntlworld.com or to his snail mail address at
114 - 116 St Stephen’s Road, Sneinton
Nottingham NG2 4JS.
The deadline will be early September, and while shorter pieces will obviously have a better chance of inclusion than longer ones, there’s no specific limit at this stage: as a rough guideline, around 3 - 4000
words for prose is probably the maximum, but he’d be happy to use an exceptional piece of double that length if it were possible to fit it in - anything from a paragraph upwards will be fine, apparently…

blue skies poetry: Alberta submissions
blue skies poetry, in association with the Writers Guild of Alberta, is looking for poems by Alberta writers that explore the magnificent and diverse landscape of our province and how we interact with it. From the tar sands in the north, to the towering Rockies, to the bald prairie of the south – not to mention the rich farmland, forests and wandering rivers in-between – this land and its resources have shaped and continue to influence the history, culture, and economy of Alberta.
In celebration of the theme chosen for the 2007 Conference and AGM of the Writers Guild of Alberta, blue skies poetry will feature work by Albertan poets on the theme of “Writing the Land” throughout the month of September. The poems selected will also be included in an anthology to be released at the Conference and AGM in Grande Prairie (September 28-30), and several spaces will be reserved for contributors (on a first come, first served basis that evening) to read at the Open Mike Coffeehouse event. Each contributor will receive two copies of the anthology.
In addition, this project will connect with the “Power of the Land” concert to be held in Grande Prairie on October 20, 2007. For a preview of the concert, be sure to attend the Open Mike Coffeehouse at the conference.
To submit your work, email 1-3 poems, 50 lines maximum each, with “Writing the Land” in the subject line, to akublik@blueskiespoetry.ca. Please include a short biographical note, as well as your mailing address and home phone number. Submission deadline is August 15, 2007.
For those of you who do not live in Alberta, we trust that you will enjoy reading the work that results from this project. blue skies welcomes regular submissions during September and will return to posting work from across Canada and internationally in October.

Call for Submissions : Knockout issue 2
Poets Jeremy Halinen and Brett Ortler are editors of a new print literary magazine called KNOCKOUT. The first issue is scheduled to appear in September 2007. KNOCKOUT is not an LGBT magazine, per se (meaning that it’s open to everyone), but it will have a strong LGBT emphasis or presence (at least 50% of each issue by LGBT poets).
The first issue includes work by Carol Guess, Larissa Szporluk, Lynn Levin, Timothy Liu, Jonathan Williams, Thomas Meyer, Jim Elledge, Christopher Hennessy, Antler, Ronald H. Bayes, CAConrad, Gerard Wozek, Jeff Mann, Aaron Smith, Michael Montlack, Jeffery Beam, Billy Collins, Robert Bly, Ger Killeen, Thomas Lux, Denver Butson, Dan Pinkerton, Todd Boss, Charles Jensen, Brent Goodman, Theodore Enslin, Alberto Rios, David Mason, and Joseph Massey, among others.
The editors are now reading submissions for the second issue, and request submissions of 3-6 poems, sent all in one file, preferably an MS Word document, to the following two email addresses:
knockoutpoetry@gmail.com
jeremyhalinen@yahoo.com
Please note that the editors are NOT considering unsolicited fiction or nonfiction submissions at this time.
To be considered for our second issue, please submit no later than August 15, 2007 (although the editors recommend sending them much sooner, as the issue may fill up much sooner than that). A submission received after that deadline will be considered for the following issue. Response time is generally two weeks, but never more than a month. Payment for accepted work will be two copies, one for the contributor and one for a friend of the contributor.
Call for Submissions for "No-Fun City"
No-Fun City
Some cities are known for their sense of fun—New Orleans during Mardi Gras, for instance, or Black Rock City during Burning Man. But there are just as many cities out there that don’t want any fun at all, darn it. (East Berlin before the wall fell, say, or Quesnel during mosquito season.) Who can say what goes into making a place No-Fun City? It could be a repressive civic attitude, a lack of entertainment options, a dictatorial regime, bad weather, a locust infestation or something less tangible (but equally drab) that’s bringing the place down.
This year, we’re asking you to write about No-Fun City for our annual Summer Fiction contest. Now, No-Fun City doesn’t have to be Victoria and it doesn’t even have to really exist, but to qualify for the contest, each story must be between 800 and 1,200 words, include the phrase “No-Fun City” and be set during the summer. How you use that phrase is up to you: it could describe a location, an attitude, a philosophy, a dystopian future . . . it’s all up to you. But remember, creativity counts!
Stories will be judged by Robert J. Wiersema, noted book reviewer and author of the acclaimed novel Before I Wake. The winning stories will appear in the July 5 issue of Monday Magazine.
First Prize: $200
Second Prize: $100
Third Prize: A stack of great books, courtesy of Monday Magazine
We reserve the right to award up to two honourable mentions, if warranted by the quality of entries.
Entry Guidelines:
• To qualify, entries must contain the phrase “No-Fun City” and be set during the summer. Please BOLD the first use of this phrase in your story and the first reference to summer, to allow us to verify these requirements have been met.
• Stories must be between 800 and 1,200 words long. Please include the WORD COUNT.
• All entries must be typed, double-spaced, on 8-1/2 x 11” paper.
• Put the full title of your story at the top of each page, but do NOT put your name anywhere on the story.
• Include the title of your story, along with your name, address, daytime phone number and e-mail address, on a separate cover page.
• All entries MUST ALSO be sent in via e-mail as a .txt attachment to editorial@mondaymag.com with the words “Summer Fiction Contest” in the subject line. To clarify, we need both a hard copy AND an electronic version of your story.
• You may enter more than one story, but we will accept no more than three stories from one person.
• Entry fee: $5 per story entered, cash or cheque payable to Black Press.
•DEADLINE: Entries must be received at the Monday office by 5 p.m. Thursday June 14. No exceptions.
• No faxed submissions will be accepted, and no electronic versions will be accepted without a hard copy as well.
• Judge’s decisions are final.
• Winners will be announced in the July 5 issue of Monday Magazine. No advance notification or announcement will take place.

What: Motherhood Anthology (Poetry/Photography)
Photographer Elisha Rain & poet/writer Kelli Russell Agodon are joining together to create an anthology that speaks to being a mother in this current world. We are looking for poems exploring all areas of pregnancy, birth, and any aspects of being a mother. We are very open to all motherhood content and themes, but want poems that are powerful, truthful, thought-provoking, and/or thoughtful.
Send no more than 4 poems cut & pasted into the text of the email to:

Or you may mail your poems with an SASE to: Motherhood Anthology, PO Box 1524, Kingston, WA 98346
Please include bio, contact information, and a brief paragraph about your experience or thoughts on motherhood, your relationship to motherhood and how it’s changed you (maybe you have chosen not to be a mother), how you balance your life as a poet and a mother, or some insight you’ve learned as a mother.
Previously published poems are welcome as long as you hold the rights to the poems.
We are currently querying publishers, so we are unsure what compensation will be, however our goal is monetary payment as well as a copy of the anthology.
For more information about the editors of this anthology, please feel free to visit their websites:
Elisha Rain, Photographer www.erainimages.com

Call for submissions: BLOOD, SWEATS AND CHEERS: 10 YEARS OF RAHR
BLOOD, SWEATS AND CHEERS: 10 YEARS OF RAHRAH RADICAL CHEERING
We are compiling a zine like anthology that will include a range of styles and voices – personal, political, academic, and artistic. This book should be like radical cheerleading itself, where the initial idea (an anthology) is corrupted to create a tool for activism. Let’s start writing about our experiences as radical cheerleaders setting protest (and turned over cop cars) on fire! This is a guideline. Choose your own adventure… mix, match, or make up your own!
Pom Pom’s Not Bomb Bombs————————————–

indie books
Author: Tom Brown Date: 01-17-07 13:35
Coming very soon is a test program to sell indie books without competing with big market books. I don't have all the details, but if any indie writer is interested in participating in the test of this program, please contact Jerry Simmons at jerry@writersreaders.com.
Two hundred (200) indie authors (POD, Self-Published) are needed to run an adequate test. There are 189 slots left. The more books the better, so bring them on!
What I do know is this: there is no fee to the author to participate; the program is designed to sell books; the program is NOT limited to US authors; any genre (except illegal materials, child porn, etc).
What I don't know will be explained in an email from Jerry within a few weeks. After that informational email, there will be an opportunity to opt in or out of the test program.
May I remind you that test programs, Beta Programs, go through tweaking, that is why it is a test. Feedback and patience will be appreciated.
It is a first come first served deal for the test, then open full tilt. Don't delay. What do you have to lose? Nothing. I'm expecting book sales to increase over time.
If you don't know who Jerry Simmons is, look here http://www.writersreaders.com/about.php
Please share this email with ALL your indie writer friends (or reword it). Post it on forums, your writing newsletters, and your blogs.

* I found this on writers.net but I don't know how reputable the project is. I would be interested in hearing any feedback about this--I don't know if this would be more properly classified as a writers beware!

Of course, after seeing what the world would be like without him, he wants his life back. When he discovers his daughter's (Zuzu's) rose petals in his pocket, he knows he is "alive again."
The Zuzu's Petals line features romances in which one of the main characters discover how good it is to be alive or finally discover or rediscover their reason(s) for living.

Paranormal Anthology: Juno Books: submissions wanted
Best New Paranormal Romance 3 (2008 Edition)
The anthology, compiling works published in the year 2007, will be published in spring 2008 and be nationally distributed. [Best New Paranormal Romance (2006 edition) is now available. Reading it is your best opportunity to discover what we are looking for.] In order to have the book out early in 2008, reading must be done before the end of the year. Submissions should be made as soon as possible and reading will close on December 1, 2007. This is an annual "best of"-type reprint anthology so we want only material published in 2007. (No original stories.) E-published material is acceptable, but please -- no self-published fiction!
We are looking for stories from all branches of sf/f that also include a strong "romance" element or, conversely, romance that is fantastic, supernatural, paranormal, futuristic, etc. Definitions are ambiguous. If in doubt, send it. Erotic romance and alternative sexuality are acceptable but the emphasis must be on well-written stories.
If your work is scheduled for publication in Nov/Dec 2006 please submit it now and indicate where and when it will be published.
We prefer accept only email submissions (attached in .doc, or .rtf), but email us for snail mail address if for some bizarre reason you can not email it.
To avoid confusion, when sending material please put Best New Paranormal Romance 3 or BNPR 3 as subject line of email or on envelope.
As with any "year's best" anthology, the contents will be announced. You will be informed if chosen. No rejections will be sent out. No mss. returned.
Email for submissions or information: Paula Guran, editor@juno-books.com.
(Editors and Publishers: We could use copies of your publication! PDFs are fine or email for a snail mail address.)
BelleBooks interested in short stories and novellas
BelleBooks, the successful small press started by a group of authors including Deborah Smith, Sandra Chastain, Debra Dixon and others, is interested in queries for erotica/romantica with Southern settings and/or themes with a distinct feel for Southern culture. We're interested in short stories and novellas only. BelleBooks specializes in Southern-themed fiction, and while our current list is G-rated and mainstream, they hope to establish a separate imprint for erotic anthologies.
We're not seeking category romance with extra-hot sex, we're looking for more serious erotica written with a certain elegance. It can be dark, it can be gothic, it can contain paranormal elements. Ultra-sleek urban settings are fine, also suburban, as long as the settings are Southern. Everyone sends us New Orleans but we'd prefer a variety of other
Southern cities.
We're also interested in light-hearted and funny erotica, sweetly gentle and more sensual than explicit. I know that's vague but we're open to all ideas as long as they're written in a sophisticated style. What we definitely don't want are Hee Haw Southern stereotypesand romantica submissions that read like naughty series romance.
Send queries to Deborah Smith at debbsmith@aol.com. For more information about BelleBooks, check out the publisher at http://www.bellebooks.com
Now offering author advances up to $1,000.00.
Now offering author advances up to $1,000.00.
We're throwing down the gauntlet. We dare you to push the limits, stretch the boundaries, and send us your hottest, boldest stories.
A Noble erotic romance novel is...
A passionate, gripping love story set within any sub-genre. Feel free to mix them up. If it's a good story, we'll want it.
A graphic, honest portrayal of human sexuality.
Daring, risky, push-the-envelope hot. Our authors are free to explore any sexual fantasy, even those considered too risque for some of our competitors.
Noble authors are the creme de la creme. They write the hottest, most explicit sex scenes, while still maintaining the integrity of a thoroughly engrossing romantic plot.
Submission Guidelines: (Note: To view special projects calls for submissions please visit here)
Length: 20K words and up.
Genres: This is the least of our worries. Seriously. If the story is great, we don't care if it's a historical set on Mars or a contemporary set in the cornfields of Nebraska.
Sensuality Levels: Scorching. Sizzling. Intense. Someone call 911, this book is smokin' hot. However, no sex for sex's sake. Every sex scene, no matter how graphic, must move the plot forward in some way. Please use honest, "real" language and descriptions that fit your characters' personalities.
Content: We're open to anything...but remember, these are erotic romance novels. The level of passion between the main characters must be authentic and palpable. Other than that, feel free to explore any new, uncharted territory you can imagine, or re-do a well-worn plot in such a way as to make the story uniquely your own. While "happily ever after" endings are preferred, we are open to "happy for now" endings for series novels, and will even consider non-traditional endings if the story is strong enough to touch a reader's heart.
What we will NOT consider under any circumstances:
Erotica without romance.
Pedophilia. All sexually active characters must be age 18 or over.
Necrophilia.
Bestiality, in the traditional sense of the word. Werewolves and other make-believe creatures are acceptable.
Incest.
Snuff.
To submit your proposal please email a query letter with the following information:
Your full name and pen name, if applicable.
Your email address.
The name of your story, the expected length, and the genre.
If your manuscript is incomplete, please give us an expected completion date.
A brief description of your writing and/or publishing history, if applicable.
In the body of the email, please also include a brief story outline. Describe only the major plot points, the black moment, and the story's ending.
Please attach your partial manuscript (first 3 chapters), in .rtf form, only. Manuscripts should be double-spaced, and use a standard Times New Roman or Courier 12 pt serif font. When needed, please underline, rather than italicize, for emphasis
Send your submission to submissions@nobleromance.com. You will receive confirmation of receipt within 24 hours, and you may expect a response within 2 weeks. If you do not receive a receipt confirmation within 24 hours, or you do not receive a response on your submission within 2 weeks, please send a follow-up inquiry to submissions@nobleromance.com
