Every now and then I get a taste for something unusual, something different from the usual white-bread romance. When a copy of Desiree Acuna's Bless the Beasts landed on my desk, I thought it sounded like just the thing. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.
Claire Dupont circled the library one last time, shelving books and rearranging magazines. She loved her job as head librarian, loved the solitude of the library after hours and the mass of knowledge that stood at her fingertips. She knew every page in her library so when she stumbled upon a book that looked as if it had been around for centuries, she knew instantly it wasn't one of the library's books.
Opening the aged pages, she found the book to be handwritten in a most curious fashion. Obviously valuable, Claire took the book home with her for safe keeping expecting that its true owner would return to claim it as soon as they realized it was missing.
Sarik watched as Claire picked up the book. It wasn't his book, but he had placed it in her path and now it bound him to her. She was an interesting assignment, his first librarian. He wondered how he was to finish his job of seduction. Weren't librarians supposed to be frigid, shrewish creatures?
Claire looked to be anything but cold. In fact, she appeared flushed in a way that made his blood run fast and his mind turn toward the task at hand. Unwinding that composed exterior would be quite a kick after the easy prey he'd had before. Perhaps seducing a librarian might be some fun after all? Sarik wasn't going to wait long to find out.
Ms. Acuna has crafted a deliciously naughty story based on otherworldly sexual situations, and a bit of witchcraft. Claire and Sarik are characters you will come to both love and hate, and this adds greatly to the enjoyment of the story as you watch their relationship unfold. To give more details on the story would be to give the surprises away entirely and I have no desire to rob the reader of all the exciting twists and turns.
There is a romantic overtone to Bless the Beasts, but it is overshadowed by the graphic sexual situations presented on these pages. If you are not a fan of rough sexual encounters, including bondage and forced seduction, then this may not be the book for you. On the other hand, if you like your nighttime reading a little on the wild side, sit back and enjoy.
Bless the Beasts is a great bedtime read.
