Taking the challenge.
Challenges are good things - especially when they're self-imposed. All of us are challenged some time in our lives - and we learn from them. It's what makes us stronger. I took the challenge to write in a new genre and in a new POV perspective to make my writing stronger. Challenging my abilities to strengthen them. It might be the best challenge of my writing career, or a colossal mistake! That's what's so wily about challenges, but also, exciting.
I'm an Olympics junkie and have taped the games every day. The best part is watching the Olympians go after their dreams. Some make it to the podium, but the majority of athletes will never have a medal draped around their neck. I'd bet most of them would say no matter what the outcome, they'd never give up on their Olympic dream. A medal is the end point, but it's the journey which makes the dream exciting.
If the writing journey doesn't bring you joy even during the worst of times, then why do it? Sure, I have the goal to be a New York best selling author, but if it never happens, it doesn't make my dream any less worthy.
What helps me to stay focused and challenged?
For me, it's important to surround myself with positive and supporting friends and family.
Attitude goes a long way, and I believe in positive affirmations. I've written down six affirmations that I keep on my desk. I see them everyday and read them out loud daily.
I write at my favorite neighborhood coffee house. It's a community meeting place, and it's my office away from home. When a friend walks in, I spend a few minutes catching up and then I go back to work. I don't find it distracting to take a break, rather, it takes me out of my head, and gives me a breather.
I have a terrific critique partner and we rely on each other for support, editing and encouragement. We encourage each other to forge ahead and not give up. I can't say enough about having a writing partner to help lift your spirits when you're down, because while writing brings joy, excitement and satisfaction, it's also frustrating and difficult and demanding.
I joined my local RWA chapter and haven't regretted the decision. Talk about support, successful authors are very helpful to the novice writer. I'm on the board and want to give back in the same way. I can't stress enough how important it is to be there for other writers when they need advice or a shoulder to cry on or to share in their joy at their first published book.
I'll end the post with one of my favorite affirmations:
I trust in my talents. No doubts. No fears. No limits.
Tomorrows post: Certainty - is it possible?
Happy Reading!
