The Word on Wordstock
There are many changes afoot here at Wordstock as we enter the final five weeks (!) until this year's festival. First and foremost is our
new website, which shows off a lot more of what we have in store for the festival than we've ever been able to show before. But before we get to that, we've got an announcement or two...
Announcing the Wordstock Book Club
We're happy to announce a new program just for Oregon's many book groups: the new Wordstock Book Club. We've had so many people come to us this last year to
tell us they were in book groups, as well as tell us that they seemed to have a tough time finding good books the entire group would love, that we decided to do some of the hard work for them and find that book. And we've done it:
Wordstock's first book club pick is Songs Without Words by Ann Packer. It's every bit as engaging and engrossing as Packer's last novel, The Dive from Clausen's Pier, which was a huge commercial and critical
hit. We think it's a perfect book club read. And we've arranged for Packer to join us at Wordstock, too, to talk about her new novel and answer your questions. Connect with the rest of the folks in your book group today and
make this your next book club pick!
Are you a fan of poetry read aloud? Spoken word performances? The roof-raising energy of a slam competition? We certainly are, and after the fantastic response to our slam showcase last year, we decided to bring on the big guns for a
special Wordstock Poetry Slam at this year's festival. We're bringing six performance poets to the Bagdad Theater on SE Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland for a winner-take-all competition for $1,500 and bragging rights. And these folks
are good: Between them they've won five US National Poetry Slam Championships! So get out your calendar now and mark Thursday, November 6th, as the night to experience six of the best performers in the US as they bring down the
house. We're so excited about this event that we made it the festival kickoff for 2008!
There are over 180 writers appearing at Wordstock this year. We've worked hard to identify interesting writers who work in a wide variety of genres, and we think this year's roster is our deepest yet. We'll be featuring a lot of new names,
but there are some familiar ones as well:
Andre Dubus III: The author of The Cagekeeper and Other Stories, and the novels Bluesman and House of Sand and Fog, a Finalist for the National Book Award and a #1 New York Times Bestseller.
His new novel, also a New York Times Bestseller, is The Garden of Last Days, published by W.W. Norton in June 2008.
Aimee Bender: The author of 3 books: The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, An Invisible Sign of My Own and Willful Creatures. Her short fiction has been published in Granta, GQ, Harper's, The Paris Review, Tin House, and much more, as well as heard on Selected Shorts and This American Life.
William Least Heat-Moon: In 1983 Heat-Moon published Blue Highways, a best-selling travelogue of his 13,000-mile journey on the back roads of the US that helped usher in an entirely new era of writing about place and
travel. Twenty five years and four books later, Heat-Moon returns to the highways in Roads to Quoz, a new book about those back roads of America that is sure to delight. His appearance at Wordstock is a chance to hear a true
American original.
Volunteers are vital to our success. Without volunteers, there would be no Wordstock. And we need more! So please visit
the volunteer page on Wordstock's website to sign up to volunteer the weekend of the festival. (We need volunteers in advance of the festival, too!) If you have any questions about areas we need help or anything else related to
volunteering at Wordstock, feel free to e-mail our volunteer coordinators: Megan Wellman at
megan@wordstockfestival.com and Bradi Grebien-Samkow at
bradi@wordstockfestival.com.
