Little steps can lead to so many big things…
My grandmother told me that when I was very young. A neighbor was bragging about how long his steps were compared to mine. Since I’ve always been short (5’0”) I learned how to increase my speed until it didn’t matter.
My writing career started about the same way. I’d started writing when I was a teenager (Oh gods the ANGST!) but put it aside when I went to a vocational school and joined the work force. My more practical minded side had a plan. I laugh about it now. Sometimes it’s strange how life throws you curveballs.
For the next six years I worked my tail off, traveling all over the globe, becoming one of the best at what I do, and learning a lot about people in general. I’ve always been an avid reader, practically inhaling anything I could get my hands on.
Then that fast ball curved on me. My first marriage began to fall apart. I was unhappy with the insane tempo my life had taken and despite my husband’s and my attempts, a well-planned and steady income didn’t make us happy. Frozen dinners and living out of a suitcase was as fulfilling to me as eating cardboard. My job invited me to take a breather, go to a steady 9-5 work schedule for a while and see if I could find that spark of life again.
I took their offer.
It didn’t save my marriage. And though my ex and I ended amicably, my need for change opened up a new door. Writing…
