JK Coi Day Six: A Pen Name is Born

[Forward][Back]

I’ve written in many different genres now, including paranormal, contemporary, steampunk and horror. It all tends to be pretty sexy stuff and I’ve always used the same pseudonym for everything, but when I wrote a dark fantasy that was a twist on Hansel and Gretel, Alice in Wonderland, and the old movie Labyrinth (remember David Bowie in that?)

I reached the point where I had to pick out a new name because this book would be for young adults, and I didn’t want kids to assume if they read this they could pick up any of my other books and they’d be suitable for their age group. I definitely don’t hide the connection between my two personas, but I do make it clear which books are YA and which are not.

Choosing the new name was more difficult than I thought it would be, though. When I had chosen my first pseudonym there hadn’t been much discussion about it. I simply informed my editor and away we went. However, I would discover that everything about writing for children/teens is different than writing for other markets. Even the choice of your pseudonym must be weighed against reader expectation. I still wanted the name to have some connection to me. Just like J.K. Coi represents initials of my real name, so should this one. Yet it should feel young, although not trendy. Versatile, and not condescending. In the end I was happy. Chloe Jacobs is having a fabulous time as a YA author and J.K. Coi keeps putting out sexy steampunk and emotionally-charged paranormal romance! ☺
