This year’s festival will feature the Simmerman Poetry Prize for young poets; cookbook authors; children’s book authors; Arizona historians discussing the centennial; accomplished NAU creative writing faculty; a bookfair of authors, presses and businesses who support literature in Flagstaff; and the poet Katherine Larson. The evening headliners are Eddie Chuculate, author of Cheyenne Madonna, a writer of Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee descent and winner of a PEN/O. Henry Award and Wallace Stegner Fellowship; and Stella Pope Duarte, who was recently awarded a 2009 American Book Award for her latest work, If I Die in Juárez. The daytime events are free, but the two evening headliners have a $5 entry fee.
This year’s artwork, shown on the above poster, has been created by Mike Bielecki and will be raffled on the day of the festival. Tickets will be available at upcoming ArtWalks and at the Book Festival. Individual tickets are only $5.00! “Words in Flight” is a composite photographic design.
Other authors participating will be this year’s ONEBOOKAZ winners: Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, author of Arizona: 100 Years Grand, and Conrad Storad, children’s book author of Arizona Way Out West and Witty.
