Desiree Holt Day Four

[Forward][Back]

Well, retirement day for both of us finally arrived and we were beyond excited. I had talked of nothing but writing a book now that I would finally have the time and my husband, bless him, believed I could do anything I set my mind to. And he supported my efforts one hundred percent. However, again life got in the way and this time I let it.

We moved to Texas, a place I had grown to love on our many visits and which has given me the basis for probably ninety percent of my stories. David was a sixth generation Texan, a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, and was happy to be “home.” We built our dream house in six acres just outside a small (and I mean small) town in the Texas Hill Country. In fact, if you read my book, Target, the house where my hero lives is our house and the town I describe is that little town.
We moved into our new home and of course spent months decorating it and furnishing it and just enjoying being in Texas. We took a lot of day trips, which gave me background eventually for a lot of my stories. And just enjoyed being together and living life. Our children were all grown, mostly married and (Thank God) gainfully employed so for the first time we could really enjoy just being together.

I had a brand new computer and I fiddled around with it a lot. I was doing research on David’s genealogy a fascinating family story) and a bunch of other things and still saying, “I want to write a book.”

Finally, one day he looked at me and said, “Okay. There’s your chair. There’s your computer. You said you want to write, so write. I’ll give you any help I can.”

So I sat down and wrote.

Only tings didn’t turn out quite as I expected.
