After tons of research and eight months later, I had completed my first book, a paranormal mystery. With a big smile on my face, I was happy to call myself a writer.

Lucky for me, my father had a friend who was a literary college professor. He kindly reviewed my book. That’s when I learned about head-hopping and limiting character’s point of views, two common mistakes that many inexperienced writers make. The man actually used colored markers to define every time I changed POVs, and believe me it was frequently.

Eeek! That meant this process wasn’t as easy as I first envisioned. There was still work to be done. And, apparently it was more difficult then just sitting at my computer and typing out what those crazy people in my head were saying and doing. That’s when I started collecting books on writing and reading articles on the internet.

Before I could get depressed and lose interest (and believe me I was heading down that path), my husband decided I needed a little help. During one of his trips to the local bookstore, he spoke to a clerk who suggested Romance Writers of America. Excited and fired up, he returned home with a surprising ultimatum. Either I go to the next RWA meeting or he was going to the meeting for me. And believe me, he would have gone. LOL But he didn’t have to. I pulled up my big girl panties and off I went.
