The author of this little ditty must have never received a bad review. Those bad and sometimes outright hateful comments do hurt. But you have to remember that not everyone will love your work. My best suggestion is to grow some thick skin if you want to stay in this business.

I nearly stopped writing vampire stories because of a negative response I received. I completely ignored all the other individuals who requested additional stories based on secondary characters. In all honest I still haven’t pursued more stories from this particular book, which is funny because to date I receive requests for follow-up stories. But there you have it. Don’t let a handful of opinions sway you from what you love and want to do.

Yeah. Easy to say—not so easy to do.

If the opinions don’t throw you off your game there are a host of other things out there just waiting to take a swing at you. Deadlines. Editor changes. Publishing house issues. New jobs. Another layoff. The economy. Children moving back home. You name it I’ve gone through it. The last layoff, which happened in 2009, set me up to embrace what I really want to do—write.

But penning a story isn’t all there is to succeed in this business. Most recently I was reminded that an author’s time is ninety percent marketing and ten percent writing. And, dang-it! It’s true. There’s blogs, loops, Facebook, Twitter, and the list goes on. There’s discovering what advertising works—what doesn’t. Budgeting your money, while you attempt to get the best bang for the dollar.

Sigh… And, all I wanted to do is to write.

Since my first release I’ve published over thirty novellas and novels. I love what I do. I can’t even imagine not writing, so I’ll perform those necessary tasks of marketing to achieve my goals.
