Back to the amazing and mysterious things that play a part in the how you get to be and become who you are. While browsing the same Encyclopedia my mother had bought as a research tool, I opened one of the books randomly, just looking for some curious fact at the time, and came across a picture that gave me pause. Reading the caption under the picture I found out it was a photo of the Irish West coastline. From that picture, I read the entire entry about the country. The more I read, the more I loved each word, each fascinating fact about the past of the country that would become embedded in my heart for a lifetime.
From that day, I decided I would visit Ireland and see with my own eyes all those things I had previewed in the book. I was twelve at the time and had a long way ahead of me before I could make that dream come true. From that day on, I dedicated time and effort in learning to speak English—a language I already read and wrote—fluently. I attended extra-curricular classes, fluency courses, diving into the language head first. At the age of sixteen, I attended two months of prep classes in England to take the University of Cambridge: Proficiency test and passed with flying colors. I believe it to have been another pivotal experience in my life, another preparatory step to lead me to writing as a career, as a life choice.
Ireland was the fuel to my determination to be able to speak, read, and write English as proficiently as a native speaker. I dreamed of the day I would be able to set my feet on the land and discuss the history, the fantasy, the plight of the Irish, with those who lived there and I wanted to do it without the need of interpreters and dictionaries.
In order to achieve a goal, you have to set one. That single thought was my goal and pushed me through high school. Ireland has always been and will always be a powerful drive to succeed for me.
