Pen 2008 Literary Awards: Call for Submissions
PEN USA is a non-profit organization of professional writers who are dedicated to the freedom of expression and to building a literary community in the West. PEN USA is the third largest of 144 centers of International PEN and was originally founded in 1943.Since 1982, PEN USA has sponsored a unique regional literary awards competition to recognize outstanding works published or produced by writers who reside in the western United States. Winners are selected in ten categories – Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Research Nonfiction, Poetry, Children’s & Young Adult Literature, Translation, Literary Journalism, Drama, Teleplay, and Screenplay – celebrating the written word in all forms. Winners are chosen by panels of judges comprised of writers, editors, critics, and booksellers. Literary Award winners are granted PEN USA membership and given a cash prize of $1,000 at the gala Literary Awards Festival in Los Angeles.

Book Category Submissions
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
Authors and translators whose primary residence is in the United States west of the
Mississippi River, including all of Minnesota and Louisiana. For works by two writers
or more, the majority of the writers must reside west of the Mississippi River, or in Minnesota,
or Louisiana. Works may be submitted by authors, their publishers, agents, or publicists.
ELIGIBLE SUBMISSIONS
Books of outstanding literary merit originally published in 2007 in the following categories:
! FICTION
! CREATIVE NONFICTION: Memoir, autobiography, personal essays, etc.
! RESEARCH NONFICTION: Biography, reportage, history, etc.
! POETRY
! CHILDREN’S & YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE: For all age groups.
! TRANSLATION
Anthologies, published-on-demand, and self-published books are not eligible.
ENTRIES WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
WHAT TO SUBMIT
! Four (4) copies of the entry. (Submissions are not returnable.)
! Completed entry form. (Must include author’s state of residence.)
! $35 entry fee for each submission.
! Self-addressed stamped postcard for confirmation of receipt. (Optional.)
THE SELECTION PROCESS
Entries will be read and evaluated by a distinguished
panel of judges selected for each category. Based solely
on the decisions of the judges, a winner and up to four
finalists will be named in each category and announced
in the late summer of 2008.

America's Intercultural Magazine (AIM) Short Story Contest
(Four Year College, Two Year College, University, Vocational/Occupational/Prize)
Purpose: Short fiction award for a previously unpublished story that embodies our goal of furthering the brotherhood of man through the written word. Proof that people from different racial/ethnic backgrounds are more alike than they are different. Maximum length 4,000 words. Story should not moralize. August 15 is deadline.
Focus: Literature/English/Writing Qualif.: High school students not considered.
Minimum award amount: $75. Maximum award amount: $100. No. and Amount Awarded Last Calendar Year: 1 prize(s), totalling $100.
